Brunei sultan to mark 40th anniversary of coronation

One of the world’s longest-reigning monarchs, Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, marks the 40th anniversary of his coronation on Friday.

But there was no sign that formal celebrations were planned for the occasion, a government spokesman said.

“There is no indication so far,” he told AFP.

Hassanal, 62, was formally crowned on August 1, 1968 after ascending the throne on October 5, 1967.

The 40th anniversary of his ascension was commemorated in a low-key manner which included religious celebrations.

Hassanal is prime minister, defence minister, finance minister and head of Islam in the Malay Muslim absolute monarchy, which dates back to the 14th century.

The youthful-looking, goateed sultan rules over a sliver of Borneo island which gained full independence from Britain in 1984.

Western diplomats have said he is a hard-working ruler in touch with the people.

Brunei is Southeast Asia’s fourth-largest oil producer and the world’s ninth-largest exporter of liquefied natural gas, the World Trade Organisation said.

Brunei’s mineral wealth has brought its citizens, who number fewer than 400,000, one of the highest per capita incomes in Asia and an array of social welfare benefits.

Observers have said the country’s mineral resources have been dwindling, leading to a debate within the administration about how to secure the country’s economic future.

Why do all Koreans share the same surname of “Kim” ???

The Kim clans are some of the oldest and most prestigious clans in Korea; some were royals. Common Koreans did not have surnames until the arrival of the Japanese who required them to adopt last names. Most commoners simply adopted the last names of their aristocratic overlords rather than coming up with their own. Since the Kim clans were so prominent, more people adopted their name. The last name Lee is also common in Korea for the same reason.

It’s a mystery but even Koreans see the humor in it. In my first “Welcome to Korea” briefing years ago Mr. Kim mentioned that if you toss a rock into a crowd there you will hit a Kim practically every time. And if you meet anyone with a two syllable surname you should probably play the lottery.

I live in Connecticut and i found spider in my house today and its a medium sized spider it looks like a minature teranchla but it has yellow diamond on the back of it. I just want to know what kind it is because there is a family and i want to know whether to kill it or leave it alone since i have pets and they play with those things.

It is a jumping spider. They are usually black or gray. The black ones have a white, yellow, orange, or red marking on their backs. They sometimes have metallic green mandibles. They are common all over North America.
Their bite is harmless, but only bite if they are handled roughly. They usually flee and hide from humans. They are also helpful, because they are excellent hunters and also eat other spiders. Below is a couple of pictures of a jumping spider.

King Cobra:
The King Cobra is a large powerfully-built snake, averaging 3.6-4 m (12-13 feet) in length typically weighing about 6 kg (13.2 lb). The record-sized wild cobra was shot in the Nakhon Sritamart Mountains of south Thailand and was 5.6 m (18.5 ft). An even larger cobra was kept captive at the London Zoo and grew to 5.7 m (18.8 ft) before being euthanized upon the outbreak of World War II [6] The skin is either olive-green, tan, or black and it has faint, pale yellow cross bands down the length of the body. The underbelly is cream or pale yellow, and the scales are smooth. It has proteroglyph dentition, meaning it has two short, fixed fangs in the front of the mouth which channel venom into the prey like hypodermic needles. The male is larger and thicker than the female.
